SIP trunking in Canada is not just US SIP with a maple leaf.

Buy a generic SIP service and you get US infrastructure, US call signalling conventions, US regulatory assumptions, and a vague promise that "it works for Canadian businesses too." Then STIR/SHAKEN came into force, and E911 obligations tightened under CRTC 2019-66, and suddenly the generic trunk is quietly non-compliant in ways that only surface during an audit or an incident.

Canadian SIP trunking is a different thing. It respects CRTC rules on caller-ID authentication, meaning every outbound call carries a STIR/SHAKEN attestation signed by a certified Canadian carrier. It handles E911 the way Canadian regulators actually require, with provincial PSAP routing and address validation that catches the moving-office case most providers miss. It supports bilingual provisioning because Quebec exists and your Quebec customers deserve French prompts.

We trunk exclusively through Canadian carriers (Bell, Rogers, Telus, Thinktel, Fibernetics, VoIP.ms Canadian side) with Canadian backhaul and no US routing. For organizations subject to PIPEDA, provincial privacy laws, or sector-specific residency requirements, this is the difference between "we think we are compliant" and "here is the audit trail."

Canadian regulatory

What CRTC rules actually require, and how we meet them.

Four regulatory areas where generic SIP services fall short of Canadian requirements. Each of these is table stakes for us, not an upgrade tier.

STIR/SHAKEN attestation

CRTC MANDATORY

Since November 2021, Canadian carriers must authenticate caller-ID on IP-originated calls using the STIR/SHAKEN framework. We sign every outbound call with A-level attestation (full verification of originator and number), which is the only level that avoids degraded delivery to receivers that filter B and C attested traffic.

E911 routing & registration

CRTC 2019-66

CRTC rules require that nomadic VoIP services route 911 calls to the correct provincial PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) based on the caller's current registered address, with address validation and update workflows for moving endpoints. We map every DID to its PSAP, validate addresses on provisioning, and send CRTC-compliant E911 location data on every 911 call.

Canadian data residency

PIPEDA ALIGNED

Call signalling, media relay, call detail records, and recordings all stay on Canadian infrastructure operated by Canadian providers. No US backhaul for any part of the call path, no data processing agreements with US-based cloud providers for voice data. The data-residency commitment is contractual and auditable, not a marketing claim.

Bilingual service & provisioning

EN / FR

Default IVR prompts, voicemail greetings, failure announcements, and admin interfaces available in English and Canadian French. Portals bilingual by default. Support staff reachable in both official languages during business hours. For organizations operating in Quebec or serving francophone customers, this is a basic requirement that most generic providers treat as premium.

What's included

Fifteen capabilities, Canadian defaults.

Every feature is implemented, verified against CRTC rules, and documented during delivery. No "compliant with Canadian regulations" asterisks pointing to US fine print.

Who it's for

Four scenarios where Canadian SIP matters.

Not every Canadian business needs Canadian-specific SIP. These are the situations where it is the right call.

Regulated industry

You are in finance, healthcare, legal, or government

Your sector requires that customer data (including voice recordings and call metadata) stay in Canada and be handled under Canadian privacy law. Generic SIP providers cannot give you a defensible answer. We can, with the architecture diagram, the DPA, and the audit trail.

Quebec operations

You operate in Quebec or serve francophone customers

Bilingual service is a basic expectation in Quebec, not a premium feature. Our default prompts, portals, voicemail greetings, and support staff are available in Canadian French. For businesses subject to Bill 96 or operating under language rules, this is a compliance item, not a nice-to-have.

STIR/SHAKEN delivery

Your outbound calls are being flagged as spam

Receiver networks increasingly down-rank calls with B or C attestation, which is what most generic SIP providers deliver. A-level attestation requires the signing carrier to be able to verify both the originator and the number. We sign A by default on numbers we provision, which keeps your deliverability high.

Multi-province business

You operate across multiple Canadian regions

Your business has offices or customers in multiple provinces, and you need local numbers in each. Multi-province DID planning, E911 routing to the correct provincial PSAP, provincial calling hours for outbound campaigns, and bilingual service everywhere Quebec touches, all handled as part of the base engagement.

How we deliver

Four phases, Canadian-specific.

Same process shape as our general SIP engagement, with Canadian regulatory items baked into every phase instead of bolted on at the end.

PHASE 01

Audit

Days 1-3

Current trunk inventory, attestation status, E911 posture, data-residency gaps, and bilingual readiness. Deliverable is a Canadian-compliance scorecard, not a sales deck.

PHASE 02

Provision

Days 4-10

Canadian trunks provisioned, DIDs allocated and PSAP-mapped, STIR/SHAKEN signing configured, E911 addresses validated, bilingual prompts recorded if needed.

PHASE 03

Port

Days 11-18

Number porting from current provider in batches by location or department, with E911 re-registration and address validation per batch. CRTC-compliant port notifications.

PHASE 04

Monitor

Ongoing

Real-time monitoring of trunk health, attestation delivery, E911 PSAP connectivity, and MOS. Monthly compliance reports suitable for CRTC or sector-regulator review.

Common questions

What Canadian buyers ask before they port.

Direct answers to the six questions we hear most often about Canadian SIP specifically.

How is this different from your general SIP trunking service?
Same architecture, Canadian-specific defaults. Our general SIP service supports North American carriers broadly and defaults to the lowest-cost carrier per destination. This service trunks exclusively through Canadian carriers, applies A-level STIR/SHAKEN by default, routes E911 to Canadian PSAPs per CRTC rules, and provisions bilingual by default. For businesses subject to Canadian regulatory requirements, this is the right starting point.
What exactly is STIR/SHAKEN and why does it matter?
STIR/SHAKEN is a caller-ID authentication framework mandated by the CRTC since November 2021. The originating carrier cryptographically signs each outbound call with one of three attestation levels: A (full verification), B (partial), or C (gateway only). Terminating carriers increasingly treat B and C traffic as suspicious and either flag it as spam or deliver it with reduced ringtone priority. A-attestation is what you need for reliable call delivery to Canadian receivers in 2026 and beyond.
How do you handle E911 for multiple office locations?
Every DID is tagged with a registered service address, which maps to a provincial PSAP (public safety answering point). When someone dials 911, we route the call to the PSAP for that address and send the address data with the call so the dispatcher sees it. When an office moves, you update the address via the portal, we validate it against Canada Post data, and the new PSAP mapping takes effect. For nomadic users (softphones that move around), we prompt the user to confirm their current location at sign-in.
Can you port numbers from Bell or Rogers?
Yes. We handle porting from any Canadian ILEC (Bell, Telus, SaskTel, MTS) or CLEC. Port orders typically take 10 to 15 business days once initiated, which is governed by the losing carrier's response timeline rather than ours. We schedule cutovers for off-hours and keep the old trunk running in parallel until the port is verified working on every number.
What about calling the US or internationally?
Fully supported. Canadian carriers interconnect with US and international networks through standard wholesale arrangements, and we pass through calling with no additional configuration. Rates vary by destination (we show you the rate card). The STIR/SHAKEN attestation we apply is recognized by US carriers under the parallel US framework, so your outbound calls to the US also get A-level delivery credit.
How is pricing structured?
Monthly trunk fee based on channel capacity and DID count. Minute rates pass through at carrier wholesale with disclosed margin, broken out by destination zone. E911, STIR/SHAKEN signing, and bilingual provisioning are included in the base service, not sold as add-ons. One-time porting fee per batch of numbers, with the per-number cost dropping sharply for larger ports.
